Routes into engineering

There are many different routes into engineering, from taking a vocational (job-related) qualification at school or college,  starting out as an apprentice with a company, or embarking on an undergraduate degree programme. One route may well lead to another, as apprentices may subsequently gain sponsorship from their employer to attend University and gain further qualifications.

Once initially qualified, engineers frequently go on to achieve a professional qualification or 'chartered status' which can support them in progressing further with their careers and increasing their earnings potential. The section in HerStory on Becoming Chartered will tell you more about professional qualifications.

Tomorrow's Engineers have produced an excellent career route map which will help to illustrate different ways of getting into engineering.
