From Caretaker to Surveyor

Claire Groom

After studying ergonomics and French at Aston University followed by a series of jobs including letting agent, driving instructor and school caretaker, Clare decided she needed something to get her teeth into. She had already begun to do some work in her family's civil and structural engineering company and realised that this was something she really enjoyed.

In the Autumn of 2006 she spotted an advert for WiSET's Built Environment Returners course and quickly applied. Students on the course were expected to undertake a number of hands-on exercises and complete a practical work experience placement.

While on the course Clare developed a real taste for surveying and realised that there were lots of possible avenues in this area of work. She explored a number of different routes to gain further experience and qualifications, and is now in her final year of the MA in Property and Building Surveying at Nottingham Trent University.

With the help of WiSET team leader and Chartered Building Surveyor, Pat Morton, Clare is also on track to complete her assessment of professional competency (APC) through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

For the future Clare hopes to eventually take over the family business. She is delighted she made the leap into surveying and has never looked back.
