Nomusa Ncube - DIY Your Future

Nomusa Ncube

Nomusa used to work as a carer but when she saw a leaflet in her local library for the 'DIY Your Future' course run jointly by the Women in SET team at SHU and the Women's Construction Centre, she began to think about a career in the Built Environment. After spending 10 weeks on the course with a group of other women getting involved with activities like painting and decorating, tiling and plumbing, Nomusa realised that she enjoyed this type of practical work and wanted to take it further.

The course took Nomusa to the Women's Construction Centre in Burngreave for the hands-on sessions, and also to Sheffield Hallam University where she learnt about negotiating with a builder, and also had the opportunity to reflect on her skills and strengths and think about her future development. She then enrolled on a joinery course at Sheffield College's Women's Workshop, and she is now on the HND in Planning and Property Management at Sheffield Hallam University.

She is still thinking about exactly where her career will take her - will it be Construction Management, Surveying or Property Management? Whichever she chooses, she is really pleased that she has made the change from being a carer to embarking on a career in the Built Environment.
