WiSET CELEBRATES FIVE SUCCESSFUL YEARS
Science, technology, engineering and maths have traditionally been male-dominated areas, but the WiSET team, based in the Centre for Science Education, has been working tirelessly over the last five years to address this issue and to improve the participation and progression of girls and women in science, engineering, technology and the built environment.

To celebrate and share their success, the team recently threw a 5th birthday bash for local employers, partner organisations, students, tutors and their many supporters both inside and outside the University.
Attendance at the event, which included a cake-cutting ceremony and even a film premiere, was a great testament to just how far the WiSET team have come.
Pat Morton, WiSET Director, said:
"We were delighted that so many people showed their support for our work by joining us for this special celebration. Our speakers highlighted the challenges for women at all levels within Science, Engineering and Technology, from a trainee joiner at Henry Boots in Sheffield making her mark in the construction industry, to women heading up national organisations and professional bodies.
Adult learning was a particular theme of the evening, and we were pleased to share the news that our DIY Your Future group of learners have won a National Adult Learners Group Award. The film documenting their experiences of learning home repair and maintenance skills was a real highlight of the evening. At the heart of our work is a strong commitment to challenge stereotypes and dispel myths about the type of work the women can do - we hope that through highlighting real-life examples we are helping other women make those difficult choices."
