Patricia McCalla

Building Control Surveyor

Patricia McCalla

Patricia spent much of her early working life with the Department of Work and Pensions, but when she bought an old Victorian house in London, she enjoyed the challenge of refurbishing it so much she decided to return to university to study construction management.

Like many women, she balanced the years of studying with caring for her young son. However when it came to finding a job after graduation, Patricia found that employers seemed to overlook her and said,  'I felt my age was a big issue.'

In March 2007 Patricia spotted the Built Environment Returners course which the WiSET team were running at Sheffield Hallam University and she quickly applied. As well as updating her knowledge and building confidence, part of the course involved a work placement and Patricia went to MLM Building Control in London. Following her week of experience, Patricia was offered an interview for a permanent position and the rest is history!
